Welcome to the DomainNameWire.com newsletter.

On Friday Minds + Machines announced that it will work with
India TL Domain Ptv to introduce a .mumbai top level domain
name when ICANN finally approves the process.

As one of the world's largest cities, this certainly could
be appealing. I've traveled to Mumbai twice this year, and
web site usage by small business is lacking. You won't find
storefronts with URLs on them. Perhaps this will help.

But shortly after reading the news a bunch of questions popped
into my head. These questions are indicative of the challenges
of launching new TLDs across many cultures.

First, a large percentage of Mumbai's population still refers
to the city as Bombay. Its name changed in 1995 but is still
used. Could someone challenge .Mumbai with .Bombay? I don't
think they'd need to get "city support" since technically
the city isn't called Bombay any more.

My second question is one of language. Many languages are spoken
in Mumbai, including Hindi. What about a Hindi version of .Mumbai?

That said, most internet users in Mumbai speak English, so this
probably isn't a big deal.

Still, I think these questions show the challenges new TLD
operators face, particularly with considering cultures around
the world.

As for when new TLDs will finally be approved, there's a
possibility it will happen next month:
