Welcome to the DomainNameWire.com newsletter.

New TLD applicants -- especially those applying for "generic"
terms -- are losing a fight.

That fight is a very public one because it's a fight for a
fair shake in the press.

Exhibit A: yesterday's Washington Post article blasting Donuts,
the largest applicant for new TLDs.

The article is based largely on allegations made by lawyer
Jeff Stoler.

Stoler hasn't unveiled who he's representing and what his clients'
motives are, but you can bet it's a rival applicant.

The article quotes an FBI agent who compares some new TLD
applicants to...well, read it for yourself:

"I equate it with an apartment building, and the landlord lets
drug dealers and rapists move in," said FBI Supervisory Special
Agent Bobby Flaim, who has tracked plans to create new Web
domains for several years. "They're paying the rent, so
where's the problem?"

Wow.

You can blame new TLD applicants for the negative PR slant.
They're mostly leaving it up to ICANN to fight the fight for them.

I think there are a few reasons for this negative slant.

1. Lots of applicants want to remain quite. They don't want to
give competitors any ideas about what their plans are. They
don't want to be noticed at this point.

2. New TLD applicants haven't done a good job articulating
the benefits of new TLDs to consumers. They make vague claims
about phishing, fraud, and consumer choice.

3. No matter what a new TLD applicant says, people will question
their motives. After all, most "generic" new TLD applicants have
one key motive: make money.
