Thursday is the last day to submit comments to ICANN
about its proposed contract renewal with VeriSign
for managing the .com domain name registry.

The contract is very similar to the expiring contract.

Notably, it gives VeriSign the power to raise prices
7% per year for four of the six years of the contract.

That means the wholesale price of a .com domain could
jump to $10.29 within four years. That doesn't include
ICANN's per-domain fee.

There's little justification for these price increases.
And we all know that if the contract were put out to bid
then we'd see a much, much lower price.

Of course, ICANN doesn't want to rock the boat. The
current contract stems from legal action between
ICANN and VeriSign. The last thing ICANN wants to
do, especially at a time it's working to renew
the IANA contract and taking flack for new TLDs
is to draw attention to its past failures.

So by all means submit your comments to ICANN. Make
them part of the public record.

Just don't count on it making a difference.
