Welcome to the DomainNameWire.com newsletter.
New TLD supporters were certainly concerned going into last
week's Senate Commerce Committee hearing on the new TLD program.
By the time it ended there was a sigh of relief.
The hearing certainly appeared to me to be an afterthought
called to make lobbyists opposed to new TLDs happy.

There's another hearing this week, but it will probably be
more of the same:

The NTIA has said it won't halt new TLDs. All branches of the
U.S. government worry about acting to heavy handed with the process
as they don't want to give ammunition to other governments
that want to exert more control.
So what could slow this freight train down now?
The most likely scenario is a judge calling a halt to the program
after someone like CRIDO sues. It's still a long shot, but any
sort of legal maneuvering could also cool investment plans for
new TLDs.
I've argued before that any delay at this point is not only
bad for new TLD investors, but also for domain investors.
Delays will likely be brought by groups trying to add over-reaching
trademark protections into the system.
I stand by that analysis.
