Welcome to the DomainNameWire.com newsletter.
Last week Oversee.net, which owns DomainSponsor, Moniker, and
SnapNames, announced layoffs of 13% of its staff.
This didn't come as a huge surprise to me. The company just finished
a major reorganization of its top leadership:

It's also not the first time Oversee.net has made a move like this.
It let go of 18% of its staff in early 2009 as the overall economy
and the domain name economy tanked.

The latest layoffs are a sign of changing times at what once was a
domainer focused company. I interviewed new Oversee.net co-president
Scott Morrow about this changing direction:

Is this is a bad sign for domain name companies in general?
Let's be honest. Certain parts of the business hit highs several
years ago that they'll never see again. PPC domain parking and domainer-
to-domainer sales comes to mind.
This doesn't mean the domain name industry is shrinking. It's just
shifting.
Money is flowing into registrars. New TLDs will pump hundreds of millions
into the industry. Web site and services development continue to take
off.
Is Oversee.net's move a bad sign? On the contrary, I think it's good.
We'd love for domain parking to be what it once was. It won't be.
So it's a good sign that companies in the space are able to shift
their focus.
