Welcome to the DomainNameWire.com newsletter.
It was the Friday before Independence Day Weekend in the United States.
Like many people, I planned to head out of the office
early to get a head start on the weekend.
But then I started hearing some whispers that big news was pending
from Go Daddy's headquarters in Scottsdale. Given the rumors of a sale,
I knew I had to hang around.
Sure enough, a few hours later news broke that Go Daddy had taken
an investment:
While many media outlets say Go Daddy sold, this isn't exactly the case.
Bob Parsons remains the largest single shareholder in the company.
When I talked to Bob later that evening, he continued to call the deal
a "partnership". While that may be a stretch, it's clear that
three prestigious investors have plunked down over $1B for a piece of
the domain name pie.

That's good for the industry. Yet it's important to take a step back
and look at what exactly Go Daddy is.
It isn't just the world's largest domain name registrar.
It also dominates the web hosting industry and has taken a huge
slice of the SSL market. It has a database of nearly 10 million
customers, mostly small business owners. It has a strong and
growing patent portfolio.
In other words, it has value outside of just helping people get
web addresses.
It's good for the domain industry...but domain businesses need to
consider how they can emulate Go Daddy's role in helping businesses
and people get on the web.
