I'm writing today from beautiful Seattle, Washington. My family and I
try to vacation here once a year in the summer to escape the Texas heat.

Sometimes we bring it with us, like a couple years ago when we rented an
(un-air-conditioned) condo only to find a 90+ heat wave in town. Ouch.

But this year is much cooler and a welcome relief.

Although this is a vacation, it's hard not to think about the domain
business when you're here in Seattle. There are a ton of tech companies
that have a big role in our business, such as Microsoft (which powers
many parked domain names) and Amazon.com (with cloud services and advertising.)

But there are also some pureplay domain name companies here:

DomainTools
eNom (owned by Demand Media)
Epik

I'll even throw in Marchex. Although it's not so much about domains anymore,
it sparked a media frenzy around domains last decade when it purchased
Yun Yee's portfolio.

A number of famous domainers also call the Pacific Northwest home from
up in Vancouver.

Indeed, when it comes to domain names, Seattle is one of the centers of
the universe.

So my family will have to forgive me this week if I sneak away from
lounging to go hang out with domainers.
