Now, for the newsletter feature story...
Yesterday Moniker had to postpone its live Barcelona domain name auction
due to technical problems.

Postponement is expensive. In this case Moniker paid for an
auctioneer to fly out for the event and has spent considerable
efforts on pre-auction promotion.
This isn't the first time a major domain auction service has had
problems with a live domain auction.
One of the highest profile cases of auction malfunction was
Rick Latona's auction at the Las Vegas TRAFFIC last year:

The lineup was solid, attendance was good, and in room bidding was
strong.
The problem was that online bidding was delayed. Sellers missed out
on higher bids. Latona called off the auction after about an hour.
More recently, BoxCar delayed its auction for a week this April.

Let's face it, online/offline hybrid auctions are hard.
So why do it? More people can participate than in the old days
of TRAFFIC auctions where you either had to show up or phone in
your bid. But it seems the only technical glitches auctions run
into is when the online system doesn't work.
At this point we're too reliant on online bidding to scrap it. The days
of showing up to a conference to bid are limited. Most action
takes place online.
But I think it's time for more redundant systems. Or a plan B.
