ICANN's board approved the new top level domain name program, although
a few details remain to be worked out.
While this is good news for new TLD supporters, the timeline seems
to have been pushed back a bit as applications won't be accepted
until January. So applicants for new TLDs have about 6 months
to get their business in order but we're probably 18 months away from
being able to register the second level of any of these new TLDs.
What does this mean for you?
Let's be honest, this is all about money. It has different ramifications
for domainers, registrars, registries, web businesses, and more.

What if you're a business thinking about getting your own .brand?
Here's my advice: if you're a big company and dropping $500k+ on a
.brand is no big deal, go for it. You never know if there will be
some breakthrough use for .brand domains.
Otherwise, I don't see much value. You're talking about years of
struggles in search engines, getting customers to understand the URL,
and marketing headaches. Can you use it? Yes. But you won't want to
turn off your .com any time soon.
I expect hundreds of .brand TLDs to be applied for, but few companies
have actual plans for them.
