Welcome to the DomainNameWire.com newsletter.
Domain name owners are increasingly getting access to prime
real estate for selling their domain names: domain registrars'
order paths.
Here's how it typically works. You list your domain name XYZ.com.
When a customer at a registrar searches to try to register
XYZ.com, they're presented with a message that the domain
is for sale and the price. They can instantly add it to their
cart and purchase the domain, getting access to it immediately.
It's a powerful sales channel. But I must admit I was a skeptic at
first. If someone came to a registrar planning to spend $10
on a domain name, how could they possibly fork over $1000 instead?
But it works. Here are my results from a small number of domains
listed with Go Daddy's Premium Listings service:

Until last week the typical domainer only had access to Go Daddy's
sales path.
That changed on Friday with Afternic turning on partnerships
with Moniker and eNom. (You could get access through
Afternic previously if you had domains at NetSol or Register.
But seriously, what domainer has domains there?)

The Afternic deal gives you access to 4 of the top 10 registrars'
sales paths.
Last week Sedo also expanded its SedoMLS service. Still in beta,
it's now open to SedoPro customers with thousands of domains
to list.

I believe that the sales path is the number one avenue to
reach the typical small-to-medium sized business. The exchange
that wins the race to get the most registrar partners could
ultimately win overall marketshare for domain resales.
